Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
